4Impressive 3D HD TV in spite of poor Voice Control Features
By Chris from Michigan
As with any major purchase I did so much research before selecting the Samsung UN60ES7500 60-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D Slim LED HDTV. I looked at all the major brands including LG, Sharp, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Sony. I spent several weeks in my free time doing this, reading and comparing specifications, and checking customer reviews on sites like Amazon and Google Shopping. Where available for each model I looked at I read CNET and Home Theater site reviews as well.Based on the available technologies I had to decide between Plasma and LED for starters, and then Active or Passive 3D. From my research online I discovered there were proponents in each camp, and finally I reached critical mass and realized without some hands on comparison I would never be able to decide. My older son and I went down to the local Best Buy and basically tried all the brands mentioned above and both active and passive 3D technologies. The Samsung UN60ES7500 immediately blew away the biggest myth I had read of with Active 3D and that's not having enough of a viewing angle when move away from the center of the screen. In 2D and 3D TV we could see the picture fine when being on so much of angle where you wouldn't be able to see the front of the TV!The TV picture for both 2D and 3D is FABULOUS! Totally blows away, as I would expect, my 5 year old 50" Panasonic plasma, and my 2 year old LG 22" LED TV. I could not be more pleased! On the rare occasions I use the pass-through mode of my AV receiver, the sound quality if the TV speakers is decent; certainly far better than the two aforementioned TVs.Of course while doing my research I came across complaints for this line of TVs from Samsung, such as you could not use a mouse or keyboard with it, but under mine int he setup mode are setting for a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I'll have to try that on a later date and update this report. I also read complaints of different color lines down the display, light bleeding around the edges, and other issues, but as I said previously the picture on this unit is amazing!More than a few of the reviews I had read mentioned the Samsung line my TV was a part of were turning themselves off for no reason. I'm theorizing this might have been because they had automatic power setting set to do this, or perhaps the voice command feature misinterpreted some TV dialog as a command to turn off the set. One reviewer mentioned when they removed theirs from the network this issue stopped, mine has been on my home network since the day it arrived, with no issues. The wireless network setup was quick and easy in fact and I've had no network related issues on either of my home wireless networks, both of which use different security settings.Speaking of Voice Commands, this is one of Samsung's 'Smart TVs', meaning you can use a set of predefined commands and hand gestures to control it.It should be noted I did NOT buy the set for these features, which is good because they are, in my humble opinion, not ready for prime time. Trying to get the TV to recognize, even with the TV muted, voice commands is a hit or miss proposition. It either does not recognize the initial command phrase, or it can easily misinterpret commands. How it thinks "TV Power Off"is the command for "Current Time" is beyond me. The hand gesturing also needs work. Trying to get the on screen menu to come up when holding using the waving gesture it expects, even after going through the setup calibration, rarely works, but get a bit tired and raise your hands while stretching, and Bam! it appears!Hopefully subsequent firmware upgrades will improve this, but if you main reason for getting a Smart TV is for these features, you will be sorely disappointed. The TV comes with a number of pre-loaded applications, such as a Netflix library and there is an application store you can choose more from. There are both free and paid apps. As the TV has a built in camera, there is also a Skype application. This is also a decent web browser; with a wireless keyboard and mouse this would be a very easy way to surf the web, check your email, etc.So, in closing, if you're looking for a TV based on being able to dump your remote and use hand gesturing and voice commands to control it, this is NOT the TV for you. You'll be very disappointed in the poor implementation of these features based on today's firmware. If on the other hand you're looking for a large screen, network connected 3D HD TV with a fantastic picture, a boatload of applications, and a plethora of other features this is an ideal purchase.Because of the poor implementation of the Voice Command and Gesturing features, I'd give this TV four out of five stars.Updated 6/8/2012Now that I've had this TV for just over a month I thought a brief update was in order. I've seen no issues that other people had reported such as the power going off, lines down the screen, dead pixels, etc. From a display standpoint for regular and 3D material this unit is fantastic and I am still blown away by the picture. It responds well to action scenes for TV and Movies, and for video games as well from my Xbox 360 and Home Theater PC.As to the Smart TV functions such as voice control and gestures, they still really stink but can be downright amusing at times! Try to get the gesture control to 'see' you and no luck.. Yawn or stretch a bit and there it is! What I really find funny is dialog on the TV will often pop up the dialog for voice control and it will think I want to turn off the TV.But again, I must stress did not buy the TV for that functionality. If these features worked well it would certainly be a plus, but since they do not my original rating of 4 out of 5 stars stands.Updated - 11/12/2012It's been just over six months now and I figured I'd add a quick update. With the Smart Features (Voice and hand gesturing) turned off the TV is perfect! I've not had any trouble at all with this unit in six months and the picture remains fantastic.

5This TV has it all and looks stunning
By J. Wilson
I love this product!!! Samsung has slammed it totally out of the park with the ES7500.... I think the picture quality is stellar, I don't see any of the bleeding/cloudyness etc that I hear people complain about. I did need to tweak the judder and blur reduction settings so movies didn't lose their depth of field, but overall this TV is amazing... I would highly recommend this to anyone! When I was at the store I looked at the ES8000 also, but honestly I couldn't see a difference in PQ... I guess the 8000 has micro uber dimming or something, but to me the 7500 has it all anyways, so I'm stoked....Voice control is awesome, touch remote takes some getting used to, but is very cool, and the TV is sooo sexy... I'll try to take a picture or two and upload them for others to see...Only bad note, the gesture control doesn't really work (but I didn't care about that feature)....oh that the whole thing with Amazon VOD still stinks, but hey I think this is the best TV you can buy for under $3000....3/23 Update.... I've added a photo for you to see... Its not the best, but I can you that unless you have the brightness blown out on the screen, there is no bleeding from the corners, which is the complaint I read about all the time.... maybe other folks like it brighter than me, but whatever, its an awesome screen!3/25 Update.... Watched Tron 3d (or part of it).... WOW!!! The 3D on the Tv is as good or better than cinema 3d.... I only watched 20 minutes or so, but I did not feel eye strain setting in... in fact over time it felt like I was just watching my tv normally, like the 3d was supposed to be there all the time. On a sad note, I had to turn off the voice control, because the tv was taking commands from its own programming... :) it almost turned itself off while I was watching Amazing Race for some reason.... got all the way to the final "OK" before I scrambled for the remote and canceled.... maybe that needs some work still...but the picture quality is shockingly good.

3Great Picture, but...
By VanDoos
I've had the TV for a month now and I can't get over how great the picture quality is, both in 3D and 2D. Gesture control and Voice Control takes some time to get used to...it's not as sensitive as the Wii or like-devices. Other than the bells and whistles that you're basically paying for, there is one major drawback that I'm having a heck of a time fixing/figuring out (because Samsung customer support is convinced it's user-error; which it could very well be...but as a warning to others please read on): major networking issues.I have it hooked up to my home network and all seems great in terms of playing vides/music/pictures via router, however, the TV's firmware wants to constantly update and stay connected, thus it automatically shuts off randomly and turns back on; no matter what input you have the TV on. A major annoyance. I unhooked it from my home network and all is fine now, just sucks that I can't enjoy one of the major reasons why I bought the TV. So be warned if you're buying this TV for not just the great picture but for the versatility of using it as an extension to your home network.

By Michael Romo
UPDATE - September 29, 2012So, it's been a few months since I wrote my initial review of the GT50 and I wanted to give another update.Overall, the set is working great. I have not gotten it professionally calibrated, I want to do that next month, but the picture still looks fantastic, both for 2D and 3D content ("The Avengers" looks amazing!). Interestingly, I find myself using the THX-Cinema settings just as often, if not more often, than the custom settings I had generated using the various calibration discs. That may be more out of laziness than anything else, to be honest.A few things:1 - If you have a lamp or a window in your room that you think will reflect on the screen, be aware that the anti-glare coating will not cut it during the day. You'll need heavy drapes for the day and use a dimmer or just turn off the lamp at night. It can be distracting.2 - My biggest frustration is that I am noticing some degree of line bleed, which I guess is a problem with plasmas in general -- I noticed it with my old Samsung but find myself noticing it a lot more with the GT50. I am very frustrated to have to report this to you all and I am going to see what I can do about it, if anything -- again, this is something that happens on all plasmas, apparently, I just wanted to make sure you all knew that I was finding it somewhat distracting.(Line bleeding is when a "ghost" version of another element on a screen actually appears on part of the screen where where it shouldn't -- for example, a character's face might be in front of a window sill -- the "ghost" of the sill continues across the character's face. There is some discussion of line bleed on the GT50 here:[...] )I am not going to change my star rating for my review based on what I am perceiving as a limitation of the technology (as opposed to the set) but it's something to keep in mind. I will be doing some research to see what, if anything, I can do to address the situation and let you know what happens. Finally, I have received a few email inquiring which kind of TV stand I have (in the pictures section). I got the stand in 2007 from IKEA -- sadly, I do not think they make it anymore. It's a pity, it's kind of a perfect TV stand.ORIGINAL REVIEWAfter six years, it was time to replace my aging 42" Samsung plasma (during which a circuit board died, which ended up requiring an all new screen to be installed--thank goodness I had the extended warranty). At first, I went with the UN55D8000, which was a good looking set, granted, but just didn't have the picture quality I wanted, so I ended up returning that less than a week after it arrived. Then I heard about the new Panasonic models coming out, and realized that the GT50 looked like a promising candidate.I have had the TV for less than a week, and there is no way I am returning this incredible plasma television. I will share some initial thoughts (and have submitted photos as well), and will update my comments later as a kind of progress report. If you care about picture quality and don't feel like waiting for the VT, look no further. This set has one of the best pictures out of the box I have ever seen, with deep, silky blacks and vibrant (not never overly so) colors. My "go-to" test for black levels is the first scene of Episode 9 of the first season of "Game of Thrones," which takes place entirely in the shadows. Quite frankly, I didn't know blu-ray could look so good. The details in the bricks and the clothing, all illuminated by a flickering torch, were astounding. There was a real sense of depth and clarity, even with this very dark scene--incredible. I dialed in my own settings using the Spears and Munsil disc, but the settings included in the THX- Cinema mode worked really well and are a great starting point. The color controls for this TV are very extensive, and I think a professional calibrator could really make this set sing. I will get a real calibration done in a month and let you know how it goes. Suffice to say, once I dialed in the proper brightness and contrast and turned pretty much everything else off (and making sure to turn the "panel brightness" to low)--the set was great.I watched "Tron" in 3D using the Oppo BDP-93, and was very impressed with the 3D and the clarity of the picture. I don't have a lot of 3D content, so I will make sure to add more comments once I see more films. The glasses, which are not cheap, are light and quite comfortable, though it's annoying you are supposed to charge them via the TV--when the TV is on. It would be nice if they came with little carrying cases or bags, but no such luck.I have DirecTV and the 1080i picture looks fantastic, as does the AppleTV's 1080p. It is with Blu-ray, however, that this set really feels most at home. I cannot overstate how rich the contrast is; my wife continues to comment on how much she notices the better picture, which is a great sign!I have this plugged into my sound system, so I haven't even heard the speakers, really, so I can't comment on the sound quality. As I illustrate in the pictures, the HDMI ports are very close to the side of the cabinet, so if you have thicker HDMI cables, you really need to coax them, gently, down the side so they don't poke out behind the set. I have a set of Bluejeans cables, which work just fine, but my Better Cables HDMI is definitely very close to the edge. Speaking of cables, while the set does come with a cable stay, there is only 1 (though there are four places to put it)--Panasonic really needs to included another. The bezel is very thin and the set is not that much thicker than the Samsung LCD I had just a few weeks ago. I really like how it looks in the room. The screen swivels about 10° either direction, which is nice. It's also much lighter than I thought it would be; I was able to put the stand on and lift it into place by myself (though, clearly, you should have someone help you--I was just excited). This is a really great set. I haven't seen the ST50, but I can't help but feel that the extra 24,000 shades of grey really push this TV to a higher level of picture quality. I am extremely, extremely pleased so far, and I am looking forward to putting it through its paces--and will let you know how it goes!Update (4/11/12):I started playing with the Internet Apps last night and wanted to add a few notes:1 - Every time I press "Viera Tools" or "Internet" I am kind of shocked how fast the interface comes up. This is, by far, the fastest interface I have ever used, thanks to the dual processor. It's so fast that you start to get the feeling that you might actually USE the Internet on this thing!2 - Panasonic does have a web browser (App Store:LifeStyle) but it's a pain to download (you have to enter in your credit card information even though the application is free); I just wish it was included. I am going to fill out my credentials on the vieracast website because it's kind of annoying to enter in the data using the remote.3 - The YouTube interface is actually pretty nice. The text is displayed larger than on the AppleTV and you can sort by HD Content only, which the AppleTV does NOT let you do--so that's very cool.4 - I still need to check out Netflix, Hulu +, Vudu and other applications. The GT50 offers a very comprehensive assortment of online services and, like I said, it's very easy and intuitive to get to.Other things:1 - Clicking on Viera Tools brings up a toolbar on the lower part of the screen from which you can access various items:- 3D options- THX options - basically, switch from THX Cinema to THX Bright Room and one other THX mode. Pretty good for testing out your custom settings with the THX ones.- Viera Connect - pretty much the same as pressing the "Internet" button on the remote- Media Player- DLNA - wasn't applicable to my system- Viera Link - not really sure what the difference is between Viera Connect and Viera Link; I will check it out and update this post- Eco - adjusts the auto-brightness features- eHelp - access to the 208 page manual via a specialized interface2 - There IS an iOS app (and I would assume an Android App) that can take the place of the supplied remote control. Useful, I guess, for Harmony users who may need specialized controls from time to time. This seemed to work well for the most part but I have some thoughts:- The app makes ridiculous sounds when using the remote. You can turn the sounds off. Really silly.- The trackpad controls are the default screen, but you cannot control the TV with them. You need to swipe to another pane to get to the arrow keys to navigate the menus. This was confusing at first and then just kind of irritating, because you have to go to one page to call up "Options" then swipe to another page to interact with the options.- The reason why I gave up entering my credentials to get the web browser was because the keyboard on the iOS app was NOT sending text to the TV. This is clearly a bug, but once it is fixed, this will work like the AppleTV, where you can use your iOS device to type into the TV, which is obviously much better than using the remote. Lame it's not working for me, though.- There is an iPad specific app which I have looked at but I haven't used with the TV (I don't know if it consolidate the various panes, will update). So, I dunno how important these services and Internet features are to you. I really like my AppleTV, so I already have most of them, but am curious to see Vudu's video quality and check out how Dolby Digital Plus sounds--I hope it works the Toslink output. I personally will be using my iPad or Phone to deal with Facebook, twitter, etc -- even though image retention and burn-in are much less likely to be a problem on modern plasmas, I don't really feel like tempting fate with having a static web browser interface on the screen while I am surfing the web.hope this update helps!4/15/23 Quick updateTried the 3D. Here's what I got:1 - 2D-3D conversion was nothing to write home about. I didn't know if it was working half the time. Maybe I did something wrong, but it just gave me a headache.2 - Straight up 3D is awesome. Watched beginning of Hugo and found it hard to press "Stop". If you are into the 3D, you MAY want to get the 55" for a more immersive experience, but the 50" was fantastic, regardless. I still think the glasses make your eyes get tired, but still--the depth is really great, and the sense of immersion with "floaty-bits" was really top notch, at least in "Hugo". Look, 3D might look brighter on the LED/LCD set I had before, but there was a sense of depth here that I felt lacking in the Samsung I tried out.3 - I have a few "THX" Blu-rays. I watched them in "THX Cinema" mode and they looked awesome. Maybe THX is not necessarily just hype?4 - Demo'ed the streaming services. Vudu's HDX format is no joke--it looks incredible, close (from my viewing distance) to Blu-ray, totally. HOWEVER, I could not get Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 (which is supposed to sound GREAT) output from the Toslink output on the TV. I am pretty sure DD+ requires HDMI, so that explains it. Still, DD+ includes the DD 5.1 mix and that sounded great. I was really impressed with the Vudo service and I think I will use it. Amazon and Netflix both looked great as well. I still like the AppleTV UI, but this ain't half bad.Note: I talked to someone on the Panasonic "Raise the Bar" tour and she acknowledged that the iOS remote control app had some issues (the Android one is supposed to work fine) and that my problem (the keyboard not working) was going to be fixed soon. It was kind of cool that she knew about that. Finally, I put up some new photos showing a few off-axis viewing examples, a bird's eye view of the swivel angle, and some shots showing Vudu and Amazon content.thanks-m

5Finally, a plasma that looks good with the lights on.
By Sheshechic
I bought this tv to replace a LCD that had bad off angle views and weak shadow details. The room is bright during the day and I often watch tv with a light on unless we're watching a movie. The THX Bright Room mode is nearly perfect out of the box. I lowered contrast and brightness a bit and turned up color a few ticks. Watching shows like Game of Thrones was breath taking and bright movies like The Fall with all that light and vibrant colors was mesmerizing. And what amazed me even more is the way the image got even better after about 2 days and again after about 2 weeks. For those who are agonizing over whether to buy the ST50 or GT50, here is my advice- if you have a light controlled room, will most likely only use one mode and will you're willing to have it calibrated to attain the best possible picture - then buy the ST50. If you want a dark room mode, a bright room mode and you're not so sure that you want to spend money on professional calibration, then buy the GT50 and never wonder if you made the right choice. The GT50 offers 2 THX modes that are awesome right out of the box and the Custom mode has professional color settings that can be adjusted easily and will offer a reference picture if professionally calibrated. When the GT50 is fed a very good signal such as HD or blu-ray the image is natural, bright, has great color and contrast and the shadow details are the best I have ever seen. I was watching a notably dark movie and could see the detail in the corduroy of a man's black jacket. Wow! Hair has never looked so good on tv. As with any other display, GIGO- bad signals look bad. If you never owned a big screen tv then you should know that it makes all the bad stuff much more obvious and offensive. You should also know that just because a station is HD it doesn't mean that the old stuff is upgraded and will look like blu-ray or even HD for that matter. I think it's a shame that some of HBO and AMC can still be so bad even with newer programming. Shame on them. If you think any of this is the TVs fault then pop in a blu-ray and see what your tv can really do with a good signal and then you'll know who the true offender is. If you are using a set top box from your cable provider or satellite service be sure that you have the newest HD model available and that the settings are right for HD.This tv offers a dual core processor which improves app response and may help with future apps too. I'll take a dual core over single core any day, considering that tablets now have quad core, why would anyone interested in using apps or the internet even consider a single core processor? BTW, wireless was very easy to setup and updating happens without a hitch. There's not a tv out there that is perfect and certainly this tv has a few flaws too. However, my rating is based on what's available, not dreams. The GT50 does have dithering (inherent to plasma tech), DSE (dirty screen effect), does not offer the same tools (isf) for picture adjustment that some manufacturers do and the web browser does not support Flash Player- only HTML 5. IMO, the dithering isn't too bad and is often subtle when it does show up, but can be bad with lower quality signals. If you have a lot of dithering (or sparkles) try lowering your brightness setting. I've only seen DSE once during a subway shooting scene that was dark and is improved when using a less bright mode.I only hear buzzing if my ear is 2" or less from the white part of the screen. Plasmas shouldn't buzz very much more than this. The tv does not have brightness pops or floating blacks either. This tv is well worth the investment. If you're coming from LCD and really want to love a plasma check this one out in THX Bright Room. ;)Update: I exchanged this tv for the 55VT50 a week ago and I am returning the VT50 to get the 60GT50 back again. IMO, the VT is only very slightly better at handling reflections, blacks are slightly better but not much, shadow detail out of the box was not as good as the GT and the VT will definitely need professional calibration to achieve what might be a significant improvement over the lower models and none of the flaws associated with the ST & GT are any better on the VT- it is not better at motion handling. So my opinion it that the improvements with the VT are not significant enough to justify the price difference, especially not when comparing sets of equal size. I love the picture so much on the GT50 that I don't feel compelled to get it calibrated and that is just not true about the VT50. Also, the 5" size difference was enough to change the experience I had, while watching John Carter I couldn't help but clearly understand what was missing. The 60GT50 is coming home to stay and I can't wait until it gets here. 8DBTW, thank you Amazon for the price match. '''Update: 1-6-13 This tv still looks amazing and even more so after updating the settings in Custom. We still use the THX bright room settings when it's really bright outside and the shades are all the way up (windows are now directly across from the tv). There is still glare but no worse than on other tvs and not as bad as on some. Blacks still look good even with all that light shining directly on the set. I have seen no image retention while watching tv and I do not hunt for it. We do nothing special to prevent image retention either, we watch anywhere from 1-3 hours of MSNBC daily and hubby has been watching a ton of football.I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a great price on a smaller GT50 for another room.

3Problem Image Rention
By akgirl
I purchased this TV in August 2012 and have been extremely happy with it, the picture is excellent. A few days ago I noticed that I had an image showing on the screen on all my channels, a retained image from a channel I watch frequently. I contacted Panasonic through email and they advised me run an "Anti-Image Retention" scan in the Setup menu. I ran the scan for the full 15 minutes and the problem still persists so I let them know. They advised me to call the Panasonic customer care center due to my television most likely requiring service. I phoned and was told image retention was not covered under warranty and gave me some tips on how I might be able to get rid of it. I wanted to pass them on to everyone:-Use dimmer brightness-Don't stay on one channel too long, periodically switch channels-Run the "Anti Image Retention Scan" twice a day until image fades-Don't run a channel too long that has a still image on it-Use standard mode instead of vividIt would have been very helpful to have received this information with the TV's set-up quide. I had no idea this type of problem existed. And if I knew the problem was a possibilty I certainly would not have purchased a plasma television let alone pay $1600 for it.

4Philips 50 inch - a decent flatscreen for a great value
By Trevor M
The picture quality looks great for XBOX, PS3, DVD, Blu-ray, and HD cable channels. For regular TV or regular cable with no HD channels, the picture is not high quality. It is 1080p but only 60Hz as oppose to 120Hz. I think that may make a little bit of a difference. Also this is an LCD, which I believe is a little less quality than an LED or plasma. For around 600 bucks, however, I think it is worth the money. Since I subscribe to HD channels with my cable provider and play a lot of XBOX and Netflix from my XBOX, this TV does suit my needs, which is an affordable 50 inch flat screen with a decent picture and the TV physically looks very sleek as well. I would not pay too much more than 600 for this, though. All in all, a decent purchase that I do not regret.**UPDATE March 10, 2013** - Still enjoying my TV, no regrets, no signs of losing picture quality.

5great HD performance and exceptional sound
By anshuman_sri
Great hd performance and sound is really crisp and clear compare to any other TV, never expected this kind of sound with the TV set. But if you don't have HD connection then you need to be careful buying this TV as this TVs software is not great enough to create interpolation graphics between the frame, but this is something could be upgraded using wireless .

4TV Stand is too wide - 1st Thoughts
By Corey Fisher
I am currently reviewing one of these units and will post a more in depth review soon. However, I needed to post this right away for those considering purchasing this tv..Right now, the tv (55-inch) is currently 48 inches wide. The problem I am having with this TV is that the stand is also 48 inches wide, which will be a huge inconvenience to most people. It's too wide for 90% of TV stands out there so be warned before purchasing this tv. It currently is also measured 12 inches depth too. I have yet to find a tv stand other then an ultra wide or expensive shelf to sit it on. This is another poor example of form over function. I have a feeling Samsung will bite the bullet on this one because of this mistake as most will have a difficult time find a stand to put this on or it will be un-achievable on their current existing stands. This won't be an issue for those wall mounting, but before you buy this TV, you better measure where you'll put it first.**UPDATE - 03/06/2013I have been testing the unit for a few days now and we found a TV stand that can hold the thing. I've raised the review 1-star due to the picture quality being extroardinary, however, I strongly believe the stand is very impractical, hence, the deduction of 1-star. I've actually reached out to Samsung to see if they can design a new retrofitted stand that hold the set and be a bit more practical and release as an accessory, because this thing is ridiculously wide. Alright, enough with the stand now.As for the initial picture quality results. They are outstanding. The back panel is comprised of literally thousands of miniature LED lights that produce very strong light and can dim all the way down to be completely turned off. So far, the factory calibration is much improved over last year's, I doubt we will have to modify it much. The image quality is much better as well, there is currently no observable light bleed or halo'ing around images. Darks are much much darker then the ES series, but the ES series were edge-lit, these new panels are not as they are full back-lit set's. The new sets do eliminate most of the image blur found common on LCD sets and it appears, at least initially, that the image is much faster and responsive. However, fast paced scenes like those in Transformers and etc are still not as clear the Plasma panels, but either way are improved still. Black levels are insane for a LED set and depending on when we measure against the best from LG and Sony, might be some of darkest blacks on a LED set yet. I should note that we havent measured it yet. However, we have put the set in complete darkness and tested it and all we could see were images and no halo, which is huge.3D performance is in fact definitely brighter and smoother and I am unable to identify artifacting or crosstalk whatsoever, however I should note that last year's ES series did a pretty good job at crosstalk reduction, but the new sets are in fact much brighter.Smart Hub - more on this later, but a MASSIVE improvement over anything we've seen yet. The interface is ingenius and amazing at the same time, just make sure to youtube this as the picture will not do it justice. Not only is this software elegant looking, the TV defaults to it when it's turned on as it is essentially the control hub for the set. The quad core in this set makes this dashboard wicked fast and apps pop up in mere seconds. In comparison to last years sets, its seams about 5 times as fast. The last year models will get this functionality via a "evolution kit" when Samsung releases those next month.Other misc features - The camera is much improved, more accurately coordinating your movements. Last year models weren't that great until they released several firmware updates to make it usable and practical, but still wasn't that great. These new models are better at tracking movement and resemble the smoothness of the Microsoft Kinect, which is great news for those waving a burrito at the set and dont want to grease up the remote. The voice activation is WAY better, coming close to the ease of use of Siri and maybe, just maybe even surpassing it. So far, I would say the voice recognition is about 90% accurate, compared to last years sets, which I would probably peg at about 75% after the firmware updates. This is likely due to the new software and quad core A15 chipset this new set has. I would assume the new sets will be just as good when they get the evolution kit.If your thinking of this TV or The Samsung F8500 Plama's, I can tell you right now without a shadow of doubt, the F8500 Plasma panels are KING and are much better in image quality and they seams to even be closing in to the quality of an OLED set, which are currently priced at $10,000. The F8000 LED sets are nice, but not F8500 Plasma nice. You'll need to observe both to understand what I mean. More on this later.More to come...**UPDATE 03/07/2013**To clarify, this TV does not appear to be a full array back-lit set, but it uses new technology called Precision Black, which appears to be some kind of hardware filter on the TV set. See below for Samsung's description taken from the manual spec sheet.Micro Dimming Ultimate:Displays a picture that is as true-to-life as possible by maximizingthe contrast between light and dark. Our innovative technologyscans zones across the image and adjusts brightness to deliverdeeper dark tones and brighter whites. It also eliminates the"halo" effect and image distortion that can happen with diffusedlights. The Ultimate version of this technology optimizes thequality to new heights by scanning 2 times the number of zonesin the image.Precision Black (Local Dimming):Produces a much greater increase in contrast and black levelsby dimming LEDs behind dark areas of the picture, thus makingblacks darker without affecting brighter elements of the picture.**UPDATE 03/08/2013**One thing I've noticed that might be an issue for a lot people is the smart hub and its multi tasking capabilities. The new Smart Hub is essentially a full blown operating system and can open multiple applications. However, I recommend not opening more then one app at a time. I've noticed the more apps that are open will significantly slow the TV down to the point of almost freezing. So be careful using the multi tasking capabilities.

The difference of this TV and last years ES8000 seems to be this new model has the settings to control the dimming to mask the clouding and light bleed, and the ES8000 doesn't. I have a feeling that the ES8000 is capable of and has the hardware to dim just as this new F8000 does. i have a feeling that since the ES "may" have the hardware, the only thing missing is the settings to control it. So what are these settings called? Cinema black and Smart LED.. Every Samsung or Sony that used to use Samsung's panels and is now using LG's this year has a dimming called "Ce dimming" this is a dimming that owners of the ES8000 cannot control and it dims the whole screen based on dark scenes. Sometimes even turning off the screen. This is what I think they are calling "Precision black" this year. All that is, is Samsung's term for "Local dimming" aka CE dimming. Then of course there's the Micro dimming ultimate which dims the zones and is "software" based and controllable. When I say software based and controllable, I mean they have control over these zones that dim the picture in the corners to eliminate or mask the light bleed in the corners and clouding which Samsung now says its "within specs" lol! The other thing is the panel that's in my F8000 is the same TS01 panel that's in my ES8000. This means that the only difference between these models is the "so called" quad core processor IMO.So my advise would would be either wait until the price drops on this model, or buy the heavily discounted ES while you still can. I seriously think that the ES is capable of having the cinema black and smart led setting, but Samsung left the settings out, or took them away like they did with the "Shadow detail" and "edge enhancer" through the very first FW update the ES had back in March last year! I also find it strange that they removed the "Black enhancer" setting from the owners in the UK when they updated the FW on their ES last year.I also think its bizarre how much the picture on my ES has been changing after updating the FW through out the year I've had it. Its also bizarre how there's never any patch notes on these FW updates. So once you get your TV and it says there's a FW update, you won't be able to find out what its even doing to your $3K TV! That's fishy to me!What's also fishy to me is when they released the 75" ES9000 in May, they also released a FW update on the ES and when I updated it, it made my picture look bad. When I say bad, I mean it had clouding and flashlighting that it never had before. Was that done on purpose to make the 75" ES9000 look like its the "top" dog TV? Hmm!People please be smart! I have owned all Samsung's past years 8000 series and I can say they all seem the same to me. Yea, some have better black levels, but that's because of their dimming going on. Without any of Samsung's mysterious dimming, these TVs will look horrible or just like any other TV on the wall. Whats interesting is how much control Samsung has over this dimming through FW updates. The ES has had more FW updates then my 2009 iMac! Now that's bizarre right? A TV is not a full computer.. Its a TV! And shouldn't need so many FW updates period!I have before and after pics of my ES from before FW 1046.2 and after FW 1046.2 and you would be shocked to see the difference in what Samsung can do with these FW updates. They shouldn't have control over our TVs like they do. And they certainly shouldn't be taking out settings from owners after they bought the TV. The black enhancer is a setting that's very useful using movie mode. It really helps the clouding and Samsung took it away on the UK owners but left it on the US TVs.. Hmm!Now, I am not saying this is a bad TV, or doesn't have a good picture at all. I'm saying that its not worth over $1K then the ES right now.. I'm also trying to explain that consumers shouldn't let the marketing tactics get the best of them.So why is the UK version of this TV, NOT getting the "Smart LED" setting that this US version has? Could it be that the people in the UK have a very strict consumers protection law and manufactures can't get away with things they can get away with here? My honest opinion is, the ES and this F are the same exact TV except for the quad core and the 2 settings I talked about.. And get this, Samsung said last year that if you buy these TVs, you will be able to buy a kit the following year that will make the PICTURE quality even better! And just recently, people are saying it won't..lol!Samsung can easily give last years model the same smart hub that this has through a FW update. No one should need a quad core in this TV. A dual core should be super fast enough, its all a marketing tactic scam to make more money every year.. Wake up people! :)Here's some proof that this model had the same exact settings as the 2012 ES8000 and ES7500 and Samsung removed them!ATTENTION - all consumers who are buying the ES8000 rather then this model, please do yourself a favor and download the 1046.2 FW update right now to a USB stick before Samsung removes it as this is the FW you want.. Not the current 1047 FW.. You can download it right to your computer right now and save it for when you get your TV.. This is very important because if they catch on here and send another update, you won't be able to get this amazing 1046.2 update any longer... And please do yourself a huge favor and buy the extended warranty.. Trust me! You need it with these Samsung TVs...FYI, I bought this in the 46" at a local dealer just to put it side by side with my D8000, ES8000 to see what the differences are, and of course it only looked better when the F8000 had the "cinema black" and "Smart led" enabled compared to the ES8000 that doesn't have these settings due to Samsung either leaving them out on purpose to make the 75" 9000 look better back in May.All Im saying is that if my ES8000 had these 2 settings which can be added through FW updates since they have the same hardware, then my ES8000 would look the same as the F8000 I had for a very short time yesterday. But, this F8000 side by side with my 2011 D8000, it looked the same to me.. Also, my D8000 doesn't have the current FW. It still has the 1026 FW from way back which is why it still looks very good. When I updated the FW on another one of my D8000 back in Oct or Nov, it messed up my pic so bad that Samsung had to replace the whole set.. Very bizarre stuff going on with these Sammy TVs.. But not surprised at all since my TVs have had more FW updates then all my older iMacs and PCsPeople wake up here! This company "Korean" company, is not playing a fair game and is why the Japanese aren't doing so well IMO.. Think about it, When Samsung first became well known, they were a very "Affordable" manufacture and now 8 years later, they are still using the same cheap parts in these very expensive TVs and are now charging more then Sonys! Lol! Sony just released the price for its 55" and 65" 4K TVs and can you believe that their 65" 4K cost less then Samsung's 75" ES9000 that's only 1080p?? Lol! Be smart guys!Do your homework on this company,, the writing is written all over the walls on the net.****** here's an article that everyone buying a TV should read. It explains that even the "professional" reviewers getting these TVs to review can't always trust the hand picked set they receive from the manufacture. So don't go by what all these review sites are saying just yet. Wait until you see a lot more owners reviews with different sizes[...]

4Pleased with my 42" A10
By J. B. Mccord
Well, after wayyy too much research and hemming and hawing, I finally decided on this 3LCD RPT by Sony. What finally swayed me was the sweet combination of picture quality (PQ) and price. In side by side comparisons I just couldn't detect enough (with my eyes at least) PQ difference between this RPT and the plasma tv's to justify spending twice the money. While standard definition signals are only mediocre, the HD and DVD signals are simply awesome. I use component cables and a Motorola set top box (stb) provided by Adelphia. The side to side viewing angle is greatly improved over previous generations of projection tv's (as is the brightness and crispness), but beware; the vertical viewing angle is quite narrow. My built-in media niche is elevated a bit, which puts the tv above my head when seated on the couch. There is a very slight dimming from this angle. However, it's nothing that I haven't been able to compensate for with some picture adjustments (or a subtle shim ;-)). The remote has a "Wega Gate" feature that works kind of like the "Start" button in MS Windows. I think it's pretty user friendly, but I don't use it much since I mostly just use the remote from the Adelphia stb. As an engineer, I also appreciate the other features this LCD RPT technology offers over plasma. It uses less energy, generates less heat (a factor when building it into a wall unit with tight clearances), it's light enough for one person to move around (the salesperson in the store carried this 42" tv singlehanded!), the plastic screen has less glare than glass, and the single bulb is user serviceable. Best of all; no burn-in issue to worry about! Just plug it in and start watching tv, use it as a computer monitor (I haven't tried this yet), or just run a static image all week. Who cares! Sony offers this tv in a 50" version, but because our viewing distance is 8'-10', I didn't want to go any bigger. If you get too close to these screens you will see some screen door effect. After having this tv for several weeks now, I can honestly say that I am very pleased with my purchase.

4TV: 4 stars; Amazon: 0
By J. Naylor
So, the price was great; much cheaper than the local brick and mortar electronic stores at the time I was originally making the purchase.. TV is wonderful. Seeing this TV side by side the Samsung DLP's in the stores convinced me I made the better choice. The picture is fantastic, great features. I only wish it had PIP, but I'll survive. I work from home, and I also have set up my laptop to use the TV as a monitor... It is working out really well..Now to Amazon, and some of the chaos I endured in taking shipment... Please don't make the same mistakes I made; this experience tainted my view of Amazon, and below I note some things that may prevent you from going through the same hell..The delivery guys showed up on time on delivery day.. Upon climbing out of the truck, I was handed the paperwork and was asked to sign before they even pulled it out of the truck (<--Mistake 1). After the TV was brought up into my apartment, the delivery guys left. I immediately opened the TV to find it completely destroyed. I stopped the driver before he left, and told him to take the TV back; he told me to call Amazon and he'd pickup the TV when he came to deliver me a new one, which Amazon would replace; they then drove off (<--Mistake 2). Upon calling Amazon, I was ultimately told that the TV is mine if I signed for it and if I didn't get it back on the delivery truck for return, because there is a 'no-return' policy on large merchandise, which I understood. Regardless, AMAZON HAD NO INTEREST IN HELPING ME, THE CONSUMER, OUT. Reading through the shipping and no-return policy; I noted that the shipper was supposed to unpack the TV, let me inspect it, and then remove the packing material. Since they did none of the above, and noted this to Amazon, I felt as if they should have supported me. Instead, they took in my report, threw it to a team who never cared to personally call me, and then wrote me an email saying the case was closed, because they had information stating that I asked for the shippers to NOT unpack the TV. Which was a lie. Nobody from Amazon was willing to negotiate the issue in my behalf with the shipping company. There is no direct number to call Amazon, they call you from an 'unknown' number so you can't call back. Amazon ran away from me.I made a last ditch effort to call the shipping company, Eagle, who was EXTREMELY polite, understanding, and they negotiated with Amazon the pickup and replacement of my TV. Now THAT is a classy and moral corporation; only if those guys would go into business selling the products :D. After they accepted the blame, Amazon came through with an email apoloziging for the inconveniences I was caused, for simply not believing me. In the end, one month after ordering the TV, I finally took shipment of a working set, which was properly delivered. Take note, prices at the local stores in this timeframe dropped to a level where I could have bought it locally for only a few dollars more, with the security of a return policy, and someone you can interact with if the transaction doesn't go smoothly.Seriously, would you think I'm ordering anything ever again from such a fair-weathered company? May I suggest you think twice as well?

5Great TV To Complete Your Home Theater
By Michael K. Zupan
I had spent some time researching what kind of TV it was I wanted to blow my money on. You can't just buy any old TV anymore, you need to research so you can best suit your own needs. I personally watch a lot of DVD's and play a lot of video games. So, I needed something that was going to handle games well, and most of all make DVD's look stunning! The television's design is sleek and stunning. It only weights about 60-65 pounds so you can move it yourself with ease. The display is very bright and vibrant. The TV when you recieve it, has its settings set to contrast and other settings that would make the TV look absolutely magnificent for store displays but will in the long run burn out your bulb faster, and fortunately, those settings aren't the true correct settings you want anyway. Set the 'vibrant' picture settings to 'standard', you may want to add your tint a few notches over to the right a little bit to get a more true red color, reduce your color a little bit, but in the end it's all just minor adjustments you are going to need to make.If you watch a lot of DVD's like I do, if you sit far back enough, they look magnificent watching them with progressive scan and component cables. But if you sit a little closer than you're supposed to like I do, you'll notice all the imperfections that you would see due to the fact that DVD's are not as high in definition as a high definition TV, because DVD's were made to look perfect on standard TV's. You could see some boxes in some high movement, artifacts here and there, but this TV offers numerous ways to adjust the picture to your liking. There's DVD players now that 'upconvert' with technology a DVD that's got a 480i resolution, to 720p by adding lines and throwing out some of the noise on a DVD. But with this TV it's not necessary with the 'Digital Reality Creation' feature (DRC). This helps to upconvert the image to be somewhat closer to HD standards, by adding 4x the lines (twice as many horizontally and then twice as many vertically). This isn't going to give you a high definition image mind you, but you can use this function to adjust the clarity and 'reality' of the image to smooth out imperfections and artifacts that are created by a lot of movement. There's even a function on the TV that lets you adjust just how much 'noise' you want filtered from a picture. Now, all this could be a pain if you were to have to continually make these kinds of adjustments between different inputs on your set and your digital/HD cable, but this TV will save your presets for each input. It may take you some time to get the best possible picture that you want from each component, but the time is worth it because you only need to do it once for each function and it saves them forever.Great set for a great price. Worth the cash.
