5LG 55LX6500 55-Inch 3D 1080p 240 Hz LED Plus LCD HDTV with Internet Applications
By Simon R. Mouer
I bought the LG 55LX6500 HDTV as a bundled deal that included an LG BX580 3D/Network/BluRay player and four LG 3D glasses. In addition I bought the SquareDeal 4-year warranty and took advantage of the Amazon.com Store card's 24 month no interest special financing deal, which was the deal-clincher for me. The entire bundle was around two and a half grand. I've seen that on this same model in Best Buy just for the TV, so the Amazon bundle was quite a deal. The entire bundle was free shipping (and no taxes). Overall, it was a deal I couldn't pass up.DELIVERYThe LG TV arrived in less than a week, the BluRay player afew days earlier, and the 3D active-shutter glasses arrived a couple weeks later. Neither the BluRay player, nor the HDTV comes with an HDMI cable. What LG supplies is the wimpy yellow, red, white low-resolution analog cable trio. Not including an HDMI high speed cable is, in my opinion, a poor marketing decision by LG because you can't get the best picture without an HDMI cable hookup. But don't be discouraged by it - the LG puts out a fantastic picture, and you can buy HDMI cables fairly cheaply on the internet, although the bubble wrapped varieties in retail stores are very pricey. When the LG HDTV arrived, the delivery service was supposed to hook it up and verify it works -- power and picture, and sound - that's all. They also advised me to keep the shipping box for at least a week, in case I decided to return it. They basically carried the unit upstairs, put the base together, mounted the TV on it, plugged it in, got the LG logo up on the screen, and static on the speakers. It was obvious they didn't know squat about electronics, so I am happy with them not doing more. Anyway, I didn't expect white glove service, and I'm happy with them just hauling it up the stairway.MOUNTING THE TVThe base pedestal that comes with the TV swivels +20 degrees, but it does not tilt. So if that's what you'll be using, you'll want the screen more or less at eye-level from wherever you're viewing. The TV itself is mostly only an inche thick, but the pedestal base will require about 13-1/2 inches of solid, level surface, which gives you plenty of wall clearance to plug in your cables. The manual recommends tying the screen to a wall to keep it from inadvertently tipping forward. If you are going to mount the TV up on a wall, you will want a mount that both swivels and tilts. You won't be able to mount the TV flush to the wall - it needs at least 4 inches of clearance, which most mounting systems will give it. All the suitable wall mounts I've seen run around $100 and up.HOOKING UP THE HDTVMost of us are going to hook up to our cable or satellite decoder box. The hookup choices are coaxial cable, red-white-yellow RCA cable trio, red-blue-green composite video cable (plus the red-white audio cable), and HDMI cable.Coaxial cable - That coaxial cable connector on the HDTV is only for an external antenna. But probably like most people upgrading from standard 3:4:5 analog TV to wide-screen HDTV, I just hooked the HDTV to the same coaxial cable out of the cable decoder box I just unhooked from the analog standard TV. BIG MISTAKE - DON'T DO IT - that old coaxial cable going from your cable decoder box to your old standard TV is absolutely the worst hookup to use for the HDTV! You will get a blurry picture and ghosting. Take that coaxial cable and stash it or trash it. The reason that coaxial cable causes such poor picture on your new wide-screen HDTV is that the digital signal into the cable/satellite decoder box is transformed into an analog radio frequency with an attendant loss in much of the digital information that HDTV requires to give you a superior picture. I even read some reviews where some buyers sent their new LG HDTV back because the picture was blurry. It's the coaxial cable hookup that causes the bad picture, not the HDTV.red-white-yellow RCA cable trio -- This was the standard analog hook up for audio-video peripherals for years. Most of us have these cables lying around, and one set is supplied with this LG HDTV. This connector type is there for backwards compatibility with your legacy peripherals that don't have HDMI connectors. You can hook up the HDTV using this type cable to most cable/satellite decoder box. While it is significantly better than the coaxial cable, it still results in significant video and audio digital information loss. The yellow lead carries all the video signal as an analog signal - not digital, which results in the loss of full HD digital video information. The red and white leads are right and left audio channels only, and the full multi-channel sound out put of the TV is lost.Red-blue-green composite video - This cable trio is for the video signal only, you still have to have a separate audio cable, at least the red-white RCA left-right, two-channel connector. The component cable results in a much better picture than the red-white-yellow RCA. The composite video connection is an analog signal, so there is still some loss of HD digital information.HDMI highspeed - This is the cable designed and intended for High Definition devices. If you don't have one, get one or even two. You will not only get the best picture, but full multi-channel audio capability also. When I hooked up the HDMI cables - it was a fantastic, superb, gangbusters, sharp, detailed, picture - plus the sound was noticeably better.A word about HDMI marketing hype -- The HDMI standards setting institute ([...]) only has five authorized HDMI logo modifiers (standard, high speed, standard with Ethernet, high speed with Ethernet, and standard automotive). You want the HDMI high-speed., or the high speed with internet. The "standard" may result in some signal loss. The "with Ethernet" option just says the cable can handle the extra signal traffic. It will work in the 55LX6500 model, but internet hookup has to be through the Ethernet connector or wifi through a USB hub. The "automotive" option is for equipment on vehicles running off of 12/24 volt direct currentAll the other HDMI cable claims, such as 3D, 1080p, 120 Hz, 240 Hz, deep color, BluRay, etc., etc., are supported features of the peripheral equipment the HDMI cable hooks up to - and many cable manufacturers are just using those terms as marketing hype to justify asking prices of $40 to $100 for their cable. All high-speed HDMI cables will more than meet your 55LX6500 HDTV needs. That's because it is all digital information - a $6 cable HDMI delivers the same performance as a $100 cable. You can buy HDMI high-speed cable for bout $1 per foot on-line at Amazon.com, or ebay. Don't waste money on the over-priced, over-hyped cables costing tens of multiples more.HD CONTENT:All HD channels are not equal, and all content on the HD channels is not necessarily full 1080 HD quality. There is still a lot of content recorded in 720 HD. 720 HD might show up on the TV screen letter-boxed (with black borders all around), or it could be zoomed to 1080, in which case it may seem blurry. Analog 480 SD will show up letter-boxed on both sides. Full (1080) HD content is increasing, but these lesser resolutions will persist for years. So don't judge your 1080 LG HDTV picture quality by just what you see on the TV channels - a lot of it is not very high quality to begin with. The really good full 1080 HD quality content is on BluRay and DVD that says on the label - "full 1080 HD."BUILT-IN SPEAKERSThe built-in speakers can only give you at most stereo sound or simulated surround sound. That's because all the built-in speakers are fixed in front of you. But they are very good speakers, even amazing, and you get a good, distortion-free sound from them. I had the sound level all the way up to 100 which is max for the TV speakers. The sound level at max was nice and loud, with a good frequency range, and lots of depth. But of course the limited speaker size can not deliver window-rattling, bone-jarring sub-bass. Most TV channels only give you monaural sound, so the built-in speakers are all you need for watching TV shows. Very little TV content actually carries stereo sound. Most DVD content only delivers stereo sound at best, but new content out may have 5.1 sound capability or better.EXTERNAL SOUND SYSTEMIf you want ear-splitting, cinema-quality, multi-channel, surround sound with deafening thunder and explosions, you'll have to spring for a external sound system -- which is overkill unless you have a BluRay player or DVD player capable of decoding 5.1 sound, and a source (BluRay oe DVD disc) that was recorded in 5.1 sound. The LG BluRay player I have is capable of 7.1 sound, although there is little if any content recorded in 7.1 sound. If you are going to spring for an external sound system, get a digital 5.1 or 7.1 sound system with an optical cable hookup.3DThere are three types of 3D to view: red-green, polarized, and active shutter (also called BluRay 3D.) The LG 55LX6500 is BluRay 3D ready. You can also watch the older red-green or polarized 3D movies on this TV, providing you have the red-green or polarized lenses, normally supplied with the DVD.BluRay 3D requires active shutter glasses, which run around $100 or more a pair. Just because the DVD says 3D doesn't mean it's the higher quality BluRay 3D. BluRay 3D will say "BluRay 3D." If it doesn't, then it's not BluRay 3D. BluRay 3D discs requires a BluRay player.Of the three 3D technologies, BluRay 3D gives the highest quality and highest definition picture. But don't throw away your old red-green or polarized 3D glasses just yet, because there is very little BluRay 3D content to view at present. In fact, the only BluRay 3D content I could find was on-line, and most of that was "coming soon." Cable and satellite companies, such as Direct TV and AT&T Uverse, are beginning to offer BluRay 3D channels and BluRay 3D video-on-demand as premium content. I get AT&T Uverse, but the only 3D channel (ESPN) had no actual content on it. There were only five BluRay 3D movies offered on Video-on-demand.When I first tried viewing BluRay 3D content through my AT&T Uverse decoder box, it wouldn't work. I would get the split screen indicating 3D content, but pushing the 3D button on the HDTV remote resulted only in an error message that the signal was not 3D. I went a couple of rounds on the phone with LG and AT&T technicians, with each one blaming the other. Turns out I failed to set the AT&T Uverse decoder box setting for System "Aspect Ratio" to 1080i, which was clearly stated in their instructions. Once that adjustment was set, the 3D worked as intended. My take on 3D content is that while 3D video is awesome - and there really is nothing comparable to the active shutter glasses - watching it too long might give you a headache as your eyes or brain get tired of composing the 3D image in your brain. Sometimes you see the double image and can't resolve the two-separate images into one stereoscopic image.Active-shutter 3D is new technology, and there is still a way to go for total 3D emersion. I expect a lot of innovations and improvements that hopefully will be backwards compatible. 3D active-shutter content is all done in 1080 resolution. If you don't have 1080 resolution, you won't be able to see it. You can not receive 3D info through a coaxial cable, or the red-white-yellow RCA trio - you must use at least a composite video cable, or better yet an HDMI cable. The active shutter glasses are also very expensive - retailing around $100 and up.All in all, I am glad to get in on the ground floor with BluRay 3D. But there are viewer comfort issues that could use improvement.ETHERNET/INTERNETThe TV has an Ethernet connection to hook into your home network (LAN) for internet access I ran a 50-foot Ethernet cable to the nearest wired hub to hook into my LAN for the internet connection. You can also hook up to a wireless device to a USB port, but I like a hardwire connections - Ethernet always works. You have to have high-speed broadband (always on) internet service - a dial-up modem through your computer won't work.As soon as the Ethernet cable was plugged in, I switched the HDTV input to Ethernet and the TV found the internet right away. The first thing the HDTV did was to update the software, which took several minutes to complete. Then it turned itself off and back on a couple of times, and everything was ready to go. You can only access the internet using the pre-installed apps on the HDTV..In order for the TV to access your computer files, they must be specially shared files through Nero Essentials. A CD with Nero Essentials is included with the HDTV. Nero Essentials creates a server node on your LAN, then locates and catalogs music, picture, and video files on your computer. Once that server is created, you can access the content on it. I have yet to make it work, and I suspect it is a firewall problem with my computer security software. Eventually I will resolve this, but I am in no hurry to do so.AUXILLARY PORTSThis LG HDTV model has four auxiliary ports on the back of the TV on the left side (as you're facing it), near the edge - out of sight but easy to reach. These ports are for temporary hookups of your portable audio-visual equipment such as digital camera, iPod, etc. The auxiliary connectors all mount parallel to the back of the panel, so they don't require any additional clearance from your wall. The auxiliary ports are 2 USB ports, one video-component-in micro-jack (a three cable RCA adapter is supplied), a micro jack for stereo audio-in, (a two-cable RCA adapter is supplied), a stereo earphone jack, and the 4th HDMI port.I tested the USB ports with a flash drive with photos and music files. You select the appropriate input from input button on the remote control. The TV could see all the folders on the flash drive, including hidden files, but only mp3 and jpeg files could be seen or selected. There is a Picture app to display photos, and an app to play music. The picture app only sees jpeg (.jpg) files. You can't play music from the picture app. The music app will not see WMF audio files - it would only see and play MP3. My photos were recorded at very high resolution (14 mega-pixel) jpeg files. They were simply stunning and sharp on the big 55" LG screen. If there was ever an independent test of just how fabulous the TV display is, that was it.COMPUTER MONITOR/GAME CONSOLESThis HDTV can apparantly be used as a computer monitor, accepting VGA or DVI hookup. If your computer video card supports it, you can also use the HDTV as a second or alternate monitor. I don't see myself doing this anytime soon, so I didn't pursue testing it.Game consoles hook up normally. What's not so normal is the fantastic graphical display on the big 55-inch screen.GAMESThe HDTV has some simple built-in games for those times you are bored, or waiting for a commercial to be over. The games menu is activated through the Menu button on the remote.USER MANUALThe user manual is on a CD - there is apparantly no paper manual. Most of the features on this TV are fairly intuitive, and you can probably figure out how to use them without reference to the manual. But this is a feature-rich TV, and you'll probably learn something you didn't know by reading the manual at least once.SUMMARYThe LG 55LX6500 is an excellent HDTV with an outstanding, even fabulous, picture, and, as I purchased it, an exceptional value. But you must have a full 1080 HD source and use HDMI cables to fully benefit from all of its features and capabilities. Any type of cable other than HDMI will result in picture degradation - true for any brand. All the features, such as Ethernet, internet access, and USB input work very well as far as I tested them. The sound on the built-in speakers is very good quality, but limited in bone-rattling sub-bass. If you want deafening thunder and explosions, with true surround sound, you'll have to add in a THX sound system. All in all, I'm very happy with the buy, and I would recommend it to a friend.

5LG6500 TV
By M. PHIPPS
After reading the first review I thought I needed to put in my 2 cents worth. I bought a package which included the TV, LG580 3D blu-ray player and a couple of pairs of glasses from Vanns since at the time they had the lower price. I have found this TV to be astounding in every way possible. It has a low refeclection screen which was important to me because my room can get very bright. You have to turn on the 240HZ mode which could explain the blur in the first review because I have none. The picture is absolutly beautiful and my old DVD's played are so clear it's like watching a soap opera. The sound isn't bad from the TV but I have it hooked up to a digital receiver that is connected with optical cables so the sound is outstanding. I am streaming movies through the DVD player from Netflix and the picture is incredible. This may be do to the upgrade to HD or the fact that it is done through the DVD player and not the TV. The cables need tyo be upgraded from 3a to 4a or b because of the infomation they need to carry. I bought mine at amazon at abouut $20 per cable and their delivery is flawless. Now I have a 32" old Old HD tv in the bedroom and the difference is like night and day' I have had the TV for about a month so this is an early review but I enen enjoyed watching my Patroits lose to the Jets on it! Oh, I forgot to mention the LED part. This TV is about an inch thin so it doesn't look like the 300 Lb monster I removed from the living room. led I believe makes the picture bright and clear with long life and the since it's edge lit can shut off areas of the picture to make the blacks look very dark. Almost as good as a plasma.Update 5/24/2011: This TV has been flawless in all aspects that I can think of. Very happy with this purchase.

3Nice LCD TV, Bad 3D TV
By dburckh
I have owned this TV for about a month now and I've been exploring the features. I use the TV primarily as a display hooked to a 5.1 audio receiver via HDMI (and optical out).THE GOOD:Picture Quality - Very good. I'm really impressed with how natural the skin tones are and I am picky. There are a ridiculous number of setting to tweak it as well.Netcast - LG has several popular applications built into the TV. The TV becomes it's own entertainment system. We have used Netflix a lot. It uses the now standard Netflix interface. The video quality is exceptional. We have also played with YouTube. The YouTube interface is intuitive. The only down side I have seen is that it appears you are limited to playing a maximum of 360p video. No HD. Skype video chat is also available with the purchase of an optional video camera. It appears to be HD. There are also 2 pay per view movie "channels" and MLB.Looks - The TV has a bronze dithering on the bezel. At first I thought this would a turn off, but it actually looks quite nice. Of course, the 1.2" thickness is very cool. The screen is a matte, so there is little reflection.USB Media - After I attached a USB HDD this thing played most things. Supported video formats H264 (even level 5.1, 4.1 45mbps), VC-1, MPEG-2. Only AC-3/EAC-3 and AAC audio so far. Containers: MKV, MP4/MOV, TS/M2TS (renamed to TS) and MPG. The notable exception was the .mov movies (PCM audio) produced by my Canon camera. Video, but now audio. Hopefully this will be fixed by a firmware update.THE BAD:3D - It just doesn't work well. My TV suffers from something called crosstalk. 3D TV works by displaying the left eye and then switching to the right eye very quickly. The glasses make sure that your right eye is blocked when viewing the left eye. Crosstalk occurs when the left eye sees images intended for the right eye or vica versa. Best case, you see a ghost. Worst case you can see a triple image or the 3D just stops. It seems to be the worst when a light area is next to a dark area. The bad news is that this occurs in animation a lot. The worst news is that most of the 3D Blu-Rays available are animated. Finally, annoying 3D warnings that you can't turn off and you see everytime the TV goes into 3D mode.Backlighting - When the image on the screen is mostly black with white text, you can see the black light. I don't consider this a major issue as this is infrequent.Touch Controls - The "buttons" on the TV are touch and light up when you touch them. This is a cool thing to show, but hard to use. Turning on from the TV is particularly difficult as you can't see the "on" button. Tip: To access the TV buttons, run your finger accross all the buttons. They will light up and then they are easier to find.THE OK:Yahoo Widgets - Although a little hard to get working, these are useful. I especially like the weather.Sound - Well, you just aren't going to get great sound out of a thin TV. It is better than my last LCD.Network Playback - I was able to stream up to 720p video across my network (Gigabit). Music was ok.No ARC (Audio Return Channel) - Or at least it doesn't work with my reciever (Denon 3311CI). Annoying because I had to run a second optical cable back to my receiver. Honestly, after reading the setup on my Denon I think the second cable is better anyway.3D Glasses (AG-S100) - The glasses are light and comfortable, but the ends dig in. Need to adjust them occasionally.CONCLUSION:Good TV if you don't want to watch 3D Movies. Unfortunately, that is what a large number of people would buy this for. If you get it for the same price as an 2D TV and consider the 3D a bonus you will probably be happy with it. If it were a 2D TV, it would have probably gotten at least 4 stars.

5Terrific TV, Great Customer Service
By Joseph Esposito
Since pretty much everyone on here has given this TV the same praise, I will spare you all of the details it is certainly the best TV for the money out there today. However, my customer service experience is something to note here. Like others, I was wary of making such a large purchase online. Low price + no sales tax and free shipping made up my mind. After seamlessly receiving the TV 4 days after ordering it, it broke withing 3 hours of being delivered (there was a loud snap-like sound), and there was no power. I immediately contacted Amazon, who told me to contact Samsung directly, and if they could not handle my concerns, call back. Samsung dispatched a technician to my house 4 days later, who told me that he "thought" it was a defective power card, and that it would take 1 - 2 weeks to get the part and come back for repair. Now I think most of you will agree that you wouldn't want a TV that was refurbished after just 1 day. Samsung refused to replace it, saying their policy is to repair, not replace. I then emailed Amazon, asking for a new television, giving the above explanation. When I called for an update the next day, my issue had already been escalated, and a new TV was about to ship, no questions asked, at 0 cost to me.In the end, I have Amazon did everything I asked and more, including crediting my price 4 times, from 1700 all the way to 1469. The biggest fear in buying something like this online is, "what if it breaks???" Well, mine did break, and if you buy from Amazon, you can be sure that you will be happy in the end no matter what.

4Great TV at a Great Price
By Tyler Durden
First things first, I ordered this TV directly from Amazon and within a few days the price dropped and Amazon refunded the difference. Awesome! Amazon's White Glove delivery service delivered as promised and was OK to deal with; no issues at all. So for those of you wondering whether it is better to spend a few hundred bucks to order this set from a brick and mortar store; keep your money in your pocket and order from Amazon. As for the TV, I am not a video expert type, but I do research big ticket items thoroughly before buying. This set and the previous generations received great reviews. However, I was torn between plasma and LCD. Being a big sports fan (lots of fast moving action on the screen) I had been leaning towards plasma. But the reviews of this set and the benefits of LCD over plasma (lighter, uses less energy, no risk of burn in and better for well lit rooms) made me make the plunge.Overall, I am extremely satisfied. This is my first HDTV and I am using Directv HD service and the picture is outstanding. It is sharp, bright and overall beautiful. The only issue I have, which I was worried about with the LCDs, is that I do notice some pixelation when scenes move very fast (Thus 4 instead of 5 stars). However, it is not distracting but I do notice it.The speakers are not as bad as some of the reviews would indicate. You just need to set the equalizer to the right settings. I have a home theatre set up so this is not a big issue, but to some it is so I thought I would comment on them. The set looks great, is easy to set up and I am very, very, very happy with my purchase. Especially at this price. With my extra money I was able to buy a nice stand for the Samsung.I hope this helps.

55 star performance, plus a few personal thoughts and tips
By B Rice
Why I bought this set:My old tube TV suddenly burnt out, I guess it sensed that the change was in the air... I originally wanted to go with a 42" 720p set, but my partner insisted on getting a 1080p TV so "We'd be ready for the (near) future." After reading many reviews, I learned that you won't appreciate the 1080p hi-def on a set that's less than 42". So I started to look for a 46" 1080p TV, and my budget was [$...]. I first looked at 4661/4665 models, but soon realized that they were being replaced by the 46A550. Even though this is a 5 series TV that replaced two 6 series TVs (well, sort of, consider the 4/5/6/7 classification is new for 2008), the 46A550 trumps its predecessors in specs, mainly the contrast ratio. You might have read that the contrast ratio varies from one manufacturer to another since there's no standard for measuring, so it didn't matter too much for me. I also read that 4661/4665 had some firmware issues, and at the time of purchase, they were actually more expensive than 46A550 on Amazon. So 46A550 became the clear winner.Performance:So far so good. It's important to note that I currently do not have any HD input-just the standard cable signal and Wii via composite cables. Of course the picture quality is OK at best, but I am hardly complaining as I have faith in the set. Because this set is new (mine was assembled on March 31st and arrived to my house 10 days later), there aren't many extensive reviews online yet. Usually, the Sony sets lead the pack in comparison reviews, but they usually cost [$...] more than the runner-up. To my eyes, the Sony tends to display more details and Samsung does a better job delivering vibrant color and contrast. One might look slight better than the other, depends on your preferences, when they are next to each other. But either one would look fantastic just by itself.Interface:The menu is pretty easy to navigate through, and options are where you'd expect. However, because there's no dedicated PIP button, it was a little difficult to activate that. You'd have to either go through Menu or press the Tool button on the remote, then go down the menu and activate that feature. Also, I am not the biggest fan of the remote. It has back-lit feature, but in order to have all the buttons lit-up, Samsung gives us big soft rubbery buttons. Some of these buttons can get stuck if you press hard, and I am yet to use the back-lit feature cuz I usually have a light on in the room. The IR sensor can also be improved. It is located at the bottom right corner of the frame. My room isn't huge, so sometimes I am a little "too close" to the TV, and the remote wouldn't work because it is not aiming straight at the sensor. If the sensor was in the middle of frame, it'd probably work better. The aforementioned "imperfections" are definitely not deal-breakers.Experience with Amazon and EGL shipping:Like last time, it was a good experience this time. Amazon had very competitive price in the first place, and the 30-day price protection feature was a plus.EGL shipping came on time. They delivered the TV to the room, put it on my stand and plugged in to make it worked fine. Noting to complain whatsoever.Tips on extended warranty:This TV comes with a 1yr service/labor warranty. If anything goes wrong, you do not need to ship it back. Instead, call Samsung and they will send a technician out to repair it on site.I thought it'd be a good idea to get some extended warranty (say, 3 year?) on this [$...] toy. At the time of purchase, Amazon offered two 3-yr ext. warr. options on this particular model-Option 1 is from a 3rd party vendor (with the envelop and seal logo) and Option 2 one from Samsung (with a Samsung logo). Option 1 was slight cheaper, but didn't receive very good ratings on Amazon, while Option 2 had no ratings at all. Option 2 didn't even have thorough explanation on what's covered and what's not. After lengthy research, i found out that the "Samsung ext. service" was really offered through Service Net ([...]), and they told me the fine prints of the warranty can be found at ([...]). The 3-yr Samsung plan through Amazon overlaps the first year manufacturer's warranty, so really you are only getting 2 extra years out of the deal. Service Net sells their versions of the "Samsung 3yr ext. warranty", which really gives you 3 additional years after the first year, but is way WAY more expensive. Don't know why...None of the above sounded like a sure-sell to me, so here's what I did. I found out that my Visa card has a feature called Warranty Protection. Basically it extends the original manufacturer's warranty for another year. 'n at the end of the 2nd year if you wish to extend the warranty even further, Visa offers an additional 3-yr plan that's about [$...]. You can call your bank and/or Visa regarding this feature.Hope my review helps...

5OH MY GOD AMAZING TELEVISION
By M. Moskowitz
This television is truly something to be admired. I'd say it's also a work of art.I have a high definition cable box with an HDMI cable to the TV and the HD channels are superb. I mean, the picture is totally 100% crystal clear. I have windows behind me and somehow there is virtually no glare. Yes, the TV looks better when it is dark outside versus light outside but it's perfectly great when it is light outside.I'm writing this review on my couch. My laptop is connected to the TV via a VGA cable with a wireless keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately my laptop does not have HDMI but I can see very well with the VGA cable. Needless to say, I am going to become much more lazy as a result of this TV.The 40 inches is great for my viewing pleasure. I'm sure 46 is bigger but I am 100% content with 40 inches. It comes down to price. I did not want to pay more than $1,200 for a TV (that's $100 a month for 12 months using the Amazon Store Card). So this was a no-brainer for me.If you are in the market for a TV, I highly suggest this one. It is truly a wonderful TV.The "only" thing that isn't 100% perfect is the sound. The sound is good mind you, but it is not as perfect as the picture. But for the record, I have not played with the equalizer which people report helps the sound. This is an amazing TV.UPDATE 6/12/2008: This is still a remarkable television. I don't have any complaints about it at all. Even the sound is perfectly fine. However, you MUST either have a Blu Ray player or an Upconvert player with an HDMI cable to get the full benefit. Everything looks and sounds perfect on this TV.UPDATE 7/13/2008: The TV is still perfect so just buy it already! I actually bought a 26" 3-series for my bedroom. I don't notice too much of a difference; I am happy with this "worse" TV as I am with my living room TV (this one). Samsung makes an excellent LCD television!FINAL UPDATE 3/19/2009: Well I've had this TV about a year and I can honestly say it still is great. The sound is great, too. But... in retrospect, when it comes to TVs, bigger is better. A year ago this TV was $1,200 and I just paid it off this month. But if I could have gotten a 42" or a 46", then that would be better. Don't get me wrong, the 40" is great, but what's wrong with a few extra inches? Either way you can't go wrong with the LCD 5 Series from Samsung.

5Beautiful Picture - Great Service
By Rob. B
One of my biggest purchases with Amazon and it went as smooth as possible. The picture on this TV is amazing. FiOS HD can be almost too much pretty on one screen with this TV, it's a bit overwhelming at first. Standard def channels are of course a less clear but better than expected. The only issue I have with this TV is the length of time to power on and off. You also have to point the remote just right sometimes or the function won't register. Small issue though, hardly worth docking points off this unit. The menu is wonderful and gives complete control over settings. Each input saves your settings too! The AVS Forums have a great thread concerning settings for each input that should be checked out and tested. A little tweaking got the black levels and skin tone just right.I haven't tested the VGA input, but my Macbook Pro connected with a DVI-HDMI cable is amazing! My FiOS is connected via HDMI and as I mentioned, quite beautiful. I also have a Wii hooked up via component. The Wii maxes out at 480p but really shines on this TV despite the 1080p native res. Don't be fooled though, the picture is a little fuzzy but through some tweaking you can get a great picture without springing for a separate upconverter.Shipping was of course through Eagle/CEVA. Make sure to call and verify they've got your info. They didn't have my phone number on record at first so I corrected that. My delivery man was Rick. He was great! He called to setup the appointment, was on time, very delicate with the unit, and very personable. I couldn't be more pleased.UPDATE: Just wanted to mention the finish of the screen. Originally, I was debating between this model and the older lnt4069fx due to the matte screen. I chose this model for several reasons. First, it was cheaper. Second, I decided 120Hz wasn't worth the extra 400 bucks. Third, the screen isn't glossy but it isn't matte it's more of an in-between, satin-like finish that works great in my TV watching room that has a glass front door to the outside and 2 windows. Glare isn't a problem at all for me even with lamps behind me. It really is great. The ultra gloss on the 600 and 700 models are way to much for my multipurpose room. Hope that helps anyone on the fence that cares about gloss vs. matte finishes.

2Caution: Known HDMI issue
By J. R. Wechezak
I purchased the Samsung LN40A550 40" 1080p LCD HDTV on July 14, 2008. It's my 4th big screen HDTV purchase but my first 1080p box. Agree with other reviews in that it has an absolute beautiful picture at a very good price. There are many features I love about this TV, but here's the problem....I purchased a Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player with an HDMI (version 1.3) cable. When i watch a DVD, i get a 'searching for signal' message that appears on the screen for about 5 seconds. This happens once every minute or two! I went into full troubleshooting mode by replacing the cable, the DVD player, and everything else i could think of. I tried the DVD player and HDMI cable with my other HDTV sets and it worked great. After calling Samsung technical support and getting to their level 2 support in New Jersey, they acknowledged there is a problem with the HDMI connection with the TV but they do not have a firmware fix for it yet. They suggested i wait for the firmware fix (release date unknown), or return the TV and try another one. I opted to exchange the TV for the same model. I received it today and (unfortunately) it has the same problem. I will now return the TV to Amazon, get a refund, and purchase a different model.Bottom line, if you don't use or need the HDMI connection, you should be fine with this set. However, if you plan to use HDMI I'd look to a different model until this is fixed.Update on July 28 - After further troubleshooting, the HDMI problem is with the combination of using a Samsung LN40A550 40" 1080p LCD HDTV with the Samsung 1080P8 upconverting DVD player. Together, they do not work. Separately, the upconverting DVD player works perfectly with other TVs, and the Samsung LN40A550 works fine with another upconverting DVD. I purchased the same brand so i would eliminate this exact problem! Who would think that Samsung has not tested their own product compatibility before they go out the door? Exremely poor quality control - my guess is they have a problem with their 'anynet' software feature, but it still blanks-out with 'anynet' turned off. Purchase the Sony upconverting DVD player with this TV and you'll be OK. However, now I personally don't trust Samsung.

5Outstanding Full HD Bang for your Buck!
By Neil C. McEvoy
I've had great experience with LG products - so my purchase of a 47" Full HD set from LG seemed logical. The picture on my 47LG50 is terrific! Setup out of the box was very intuitive, although I would recommend that the set's picture be set to "standard" instead of "vivid" (torch mode is set by default).Even when powered off, this set is beautiful. Its piano black case frames the 47" screen very well, although it is more susceptible to fingerprints. The set offers three HDMI 1.3 inputs and more connection options than one would normally need.I couldn't give this set a stronger recommendation!

5Great color and picture....
By tony
Pros - The TV has great color and picture quality. It's worth it for the price listed. No Motion blur with Verizon FIOS cable.Cons - The TV gets a slight distortion on certain camera angles when watching high action sports such as football. This is very unnoticeable to most of my friends but I'm a very picky person and can tell on certain camera angles or plays when watching sports the TV tends to get static. The speaker system has a Tru SRS surround feature which is useless along with a clear voice option. The speaker/surround feature could be better. I just use the default sound options for no added surround features from the TV.A few things to take in to consideration.1 - Make sure your TV room as adequate space. If you don't have at least 10-12 feet between you and your HDTV of this size you might get nausea. The TV can be overwhelming since its 47 inches big and looks totally different in your living room compared to in store.2 - Make sure you fine tune the colors and lower the back light as it's very powerful. My Tv is tuned to a 60 backlight 80 contrast 55 brightness.3 - Make sure you get an extended warranty with any HDTV you buy even if its not this model. HDTV's are highly susceptible to dead pixel lines. Most warranty's don't cover a dead pixel line unless it covers a certain area of the TV.4 - Use a HDMI cable that's oxygen free and shielded. You can buy one online for like 10$ instead of 100$ at your local shop.

4Nice Bedroom TV
By J. Allen
This is a first class TV for the bedroom. Deceptively big screen, sharp picture, good sound and simple, but extensive controls. I looked at more expensive and higher rated LCD's, but this looked like the best value. It turned out that I was right. That doesn't happen very often!

4A really good buy.
By B.A.
I bought this TV in January, so have had it for about 9 months. I looked at many models, and this seemed to be the best value. The sound is phenomenal, deep stereo which surprises you from just looking at the built-in speakers. I have enjoyed the sound in watching concert videos, such as Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Jefferson Airplane, the Who, James Taylor, etc. The controls are complicated and not well designed. There are too many buttons, and it is hard to find on the remote what you want it to do. The high-def picture is excellent. I have it hooked up to a Cablevision box. The best picture is for baseball and football games, PBS high-def, and the Tonight Show with Leno. For some reason, these shows stand out in their clear crisp picture and sound. The price of this TV has dropped considerably over the past few months, so it is an even better buy. Don't try to save a little money by buying a no-name brand. You will enjoy spending a little more for a quality picture and sound set.

5Widescreen high-definition TV at an affordable price
By D. R. Schryer
Contrary to popular opinion, you don't have to buy an expensive plasma or LCD (liquid crystal display) TV to get a great high-definition picure. In fact, many experts (including Consumer Reports) assert that high-definition TVs using traditional cathode-ray tube technology -- as this high-definition Sony does -- currently offer a sharper picture than plasma and LCD TVs, plus they are much less expensive and more reliable. This widescreen HD Sony TV has a very good picture with standard broadcasts and an outstanding picture with HD broadcasts and DVDs. If you'd like to get a widescreen high-definition TV now but your budget is limited to a thousand dollars or so, please consider this 30" Sony.

5Exceptional TV for the price
By Hammad Malik
This model (along with its 34 inch sibling) was rated a best buy by Consumer Reports in traditional TV widescreen HD category. I have it plugged into my Cablevision service for HD signal - the step up in picture quality compared to standard signal is quite noticeable. But the good thing is that even standard TV transmission (non HD) produces very good picture on this TV (which was a factor in its best buy choice by Consumer Reports). The TV has plenty of video inputs of all kinds, including 2 component video and 1 HDMI.I have my Panasonic S97 DVD player hooked up to this TV via HDMI input and this allows my Panasonic DVD player to upconvert DVD's to 1080i so I can watch them as clear as the HD TV. Granted that the DVD upconvert to 1080i is a Panasonic DVD player feature but you can't use it without having HDMI input on the TV.According to the Consumer Reports review of HD TV's, most HD TV's produce great picture with the HD signal but the picture quality is not so good with standard TV signal. Since most of the programming on TV continues to be transmitted via the standard signal, this TV's very good performance with the standard TV signal was a big factor in my buying decision.

5You Can't Go Wrong
By David in Philly
This is as fine an HDTV as one can possbly buy at an affordable price. I have seen all alternatives up to 42-inch plasmas. This Sony equals or betters them all in image sharpness, color range, black level, and so on. Fed by my COMCAST digital cable box, I have been absolutely delighted with this purchase, and do not see replacing the set even if plasma prices fell by 50%. Yes, it took my son's help to lift it upon the matching stand, but what the hell, shouldn't one get 160 pounds for $850 (at Sears on a Sears card)?

5Wish I had bought this one...
By RC
I researched the 81 and 71 series for as long as they had been announced (~ 6 months, since CES show). I got all hopped up about the "100k" contrast ratio on the 81 series due completely to the new "LED" backlighting. Well, at AVS forums, one guy bought both, and concluded that it only mattered when the screen was totally black (like the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen when watching a wide screen formatted movie, or a fade scene), and then only a little. The general conclusion seemed to point to the 71 series being the sleeper hit so far this year (dunno about the xbr5, but some reports put this one right with it), and that the 81 series wasn't worth the extra grand or more.Too late for me, because I rushed into BB to pay up front for an 81 series tv as soon as the store had the sku in their system (4 weeks before they even showed up). Yeah, I got to use a 12% off good customer coupon, but in the end I could have had a 52" 71 series instead of a 46" 81 series (especially seeing how heavily discounted they are now on Amazon). The anti-motion options in the 81 are only available in "movie" mode, and are buried in the menus, and only has an on/off option, versus the 71's easy to navigate 3 level options for the anti-motion feature. The reviews point to the colors and picture appearing just about the same between the 2 tv's when the screen or a large portion of it wasn't all black. Other than that....get this one. It is worth the premium over the 61 or 65 series. As long as you can live with a glossy / semi-glossy screen (versus the xbr4/5's matte screens), you won't be sorry. As for me, I'm wondering if I should bite the bullet and be one of those turkeys who uses the 30 day guarantee to return the TV and get a 71 series...it is a lot of money not to be totally satisfied with the purchase. Best of luck.

5One Word - AWESOME !!!
By Karen Lv Sykes
I have literally waited years for an HDTV with all the right specs (120Hz, 1080p, high contrast, 3 HDMI (1.3) inputs, x.v.Color, etc.), but finally it's here, and the long wait has been well worth it. It is simply awesome.I was very tempted with the Sony XBR4, but this one beats the Sony hands down on looks, contrast, clarity and especially price! The many features it has and the specifications it supports are probably hard to find in terms of signal input (such as hi-definition programming or discs that are available now), but I wanted to be relatively future-ready. Both the screen and the edge around it are highly reflective, so if this would bother you, or you have light coming from behind you as you are watching, this one may be too shiny for its own good. I was initially worried about the reflection, and I don't quite understand why the bezel around the screen itself has to be so shiny as well (maybe to match?). Having said that; the "glossy" screen makes this LCD TV look like a high-end plasma screen, and it is probably going to compete with the best plasma's out there. The contrast is simply incredible, and the light output was so bright that I had to tone down the brightness setting, and increase the energy saving mode. And this is exactly where personal preference comes in. You may see this screen in a store where it is cranked way up for certain settings, and you may not like the contrast, brightness, or color. There are - of course - ample settings to play with and it is quite possible to "dial in" what you like best. So don't be disappointed in the store, and don't give up on this Samsung just yet - give it another chance by trying one out at home. Just as you need to select the proper viewing size, so that everything looks normal and not too stretched or squeezed, the color, contrast and saturation settings need to reflect a normal picture. And then there are settings (like the x.v.Color) that will do injustice to the image, if the input signal does not utilize this color-space.There is a now (in-)famous blue Samsung light on the bottom of the screen that can be set to be on when the TV is on, or on when the TV is off, or always on, or always off. Using an HDMI connection, turning the TV off also turns our connected receiver off, and vice versa. You can name each input on the TV with a specific name-tag, such as DVD, game, and so on. The few "bad" things that I have noticed are blurry contours of fast-moving subjects (when you look close) or occasional slow frames / jumpy picture for a short time. These may be due to processing by the TV, may be due to incorrect settings, may occur already in the players or may actually be in the (compressed) signals itself. These problems have occurred watching blu-ray movies using a Sony PS3, and DVDs on the PS3 or on a Pioneer DVD player. Not a super big problem, but it is something I keep noticing and worrying about. Our one & only PS3 game so far looks fantastic, and I haven't noticed any movement issues while playing that. I was also very worried that standard DVD's and our home-made picture DVD's would look relatively bad, but they are still OK to watch and they look absolutely fantastic on this new TV as compared to our old one. With the TV set to 1080p, I do not see a clear difference in a DVD signal put out as 480p compared to the same DVD signal up-converted to 1080p by a pioneer DVD player or the PS3. If anything I would say the PS3 looks better. There is definitely a tremendous difference when you look at something on DVD (up-converted to 1080p) and then look at the exact same footage on a blu-ray disc (both played on the PS3). There is so much more detail that it puts a lot of the blogs and discussions (about seeing a real difference with 1080p or not - on a 40 inch screen) to shame. See the 2 images of Planet Earth footage I have also posted. The pictures were taken from about 9 feet away, using a tripod. The DVD was set to up-convert to 1080p. TV settings were exactly the same for both images. We're not using the sound of the TV itself, so I cannot comment on that at all.Pros: 3 HDMI (1.3) inputs, super clear panel, INCREDIBLE clarity and color; a great system with lots of hi-tech specifications.Cons (all relatively minor):Highly reflective screen (although this makes the picture quality awesome!).Highly reflective edge. When the TV is off, the reflective screen is bad enough, but with the shiny edge it can look really bad.No "name tag" for HD-DVD player or Blu-ray player in the menu list to assign to HDMI input (very minor point - I agree - and may be fixed by future updates?).In short - look no further. This is the one you want. This is a review of the Samsung 4071F.The following products have also been mentioned and are also available from Amazon:Sony Playstation 3 (PS3)Planet Earth

4four and a half stars really
By Ryan H. Smith
i do very much like this set. i think it has the best picture of any lcd out right now and i do mean compared to the sony xbr4/5, toshiba regza cinema series and the sharp aqueous models. for the money it cannot be touched and in absolute terms only a pioneer kuro is going to give a better image.if you are a moive watcher like i am then beware of using this set with bd and hd dvd players at 1080p/24. the resulting image is pretty, but frame drops and a slow-motion like effect aare very common. you will need to run at 1080i/p/60 to get a smooth image. the reason is that this set is actually 1080p/30 and the translation of the differeing frame rates is poorly implemented. many people do not know about this b/c they are using 60 field based sources and think everything is fine. i have tried the following on 3 different sets and the negative effects mentioned above happen every time. here's how to duplicate this issue:set the TV however you want (amp on or off makes no difference)set the hd dvd player or bd player to 1080p/24use an hdmi cableput in a movie that is 1080p/24 (pretty much all of them)turn on the player and tv and play the movie.you will see stutter, frame drops and slow motion on and off. sometimes it's REALLY, REALLY bad, other times it'll last for 2 seconds.aside from this warning, i do recommend the set because it's got an excellent picture, is well built and should offer years of great use. i suspect samsung will fix the issues i mentioned above if enough people call them.update: i called samsung and a level 3 (the highest level) tech said they know about the issue i described and are wokingon a firmwre fix. when it will arrive he coul not say, but he said it will arrive for sure.a great set and one i recommend.
